| In Modern Home Design The Kitchen Takes Center Stage | 07 April, 2010 | | | Back to Listings | | "Over the past two decades, much has been written about the Great Room kitchen – a multipurpose space with the actual cooking center tucked in one corner. Today, however, designers are telling me their clients are looking for a kitchen design that positions the gourmet space in a more central location within the Great Room. The new trend seems to be about moving the kitchen out of the corner and giving it a center stage treatment."
Ellen Cheever's February 2010 article Center Stage (quoted above) emphasizes the trend to make kitchens the central part of a home. Custom cabinets have always been a true indicator of quality, but now more than ever they will have an impact on the value of a home. Harlan Cabinets designer Angie Funkhouser says, "You should not take short cuts in the one area that everybody uses and gravitates toward. It is too important to the overall feel and flow of your home. With more and more floor plans placing the kitchen as the focal point functionality along with a hint of design will no longer do; Both function and design should now have equal roles and when used correctly they will nicely compliment one another."
